The latest Alouettes coaching rumour mill: former Packers head coach Mike Sherman enters the fray

With the Montreal Alouettes set to make some kind of announcement at 11 a.m.on Wednesday, there’s been plenty of speculation about the coaching situation.

The latest juicy tidbit came from Alouette’s play-by-play man Rick Moffatt via Instagram last night…

That theory seems to be gaining some steam, first via Gazette beat man Herb Zurkowsky…

And then TSN’s Dave Naylor….

Of course earlier on Thursday, Gary Crowton had been the name being floated…

There has been a steady flow of reporting, rumour and speculation on the Alouettes’ coaching situation for weeks so who knows what’s true at this point? But that general manager Kavis Reed could be recruiting offensive and defensive coordinators – instead of, say, allowing a head coach to bring in his own guys – makes about as much sense anything else in this whole process.

UPDATE: No, Joseph is out.

  1. Hufnagel has not taken himself out of the running nor has he been disproven yet either.

I think it is Tyrone Willingham. Wettenhal senior is a huge Notre Damn fan and Willingham was a great player and coach.

  3. I thought for sure they would be bringing back Marv Levy!

  4. Joseph has some good experience for a coach. He was a QB in college, and then played S in the NFL for 4 years, and then played QB in the CFL for a long time. So he’s spent a good amount of time on both sides of the ball, and in both leagues.

Only Kavis could turn signing a coach into a ‘circus’

Should of brought in Kent or Kerwin Bell

Should OF? Unreal what you read on the internet.

What you meant to say was “should’ve” which is a contraction of “should have”. You’re welcome for the free grammar lesson.

  7. Crowton was fired or did not get his contract renewed as OC of the Bombers in the short amount of time he was with them. If he gets the HC job with Montreal he has the chance to prove one of his bosses in Bomber land wrong – Joe Mack – for allowing his dismissal to occur. Should be interesting.

    • Mack was himself fired by Wade Miller before Crowton was relieved of his duties in August of 2013. The former had nothing to do with the latter’s dismissal.

  8. Mike Sherman. There’s an interesting name. Ordinary I’d be very leery about parachuting in someone who only has American football experience as a HC in the CFL, but Marc Trestman and June Jones show that it can be done. Jones does have some CFL experience from way back, but not much.

  9. How old is he?

If it is true that Reed has been contacting people regarding coordinator positions then the rumours of Mike Sherman make sense. He would need people familiar with the CFL and Sherman probably does not have those contacts.

  11. He’s 63, which is younger than I thought he was. His resume is impressive.

  12. It’s already been confirmed on their website.

  13. The rumor came true. Might be the biggest challenge in Sherman’s career. He certainly has the pedigree to get the job done. With the right coaches and the right players anything is possible in the CFL. I am sure both guys Sherman and Reed will use their connections from both sides of the border to make it happen.

  14. Is Mike Sherman any relation to Ali Sherman who coached the Bombers in the 50’s?

It appears now the long delay in picking the HC was on the Alouette owners, not on Reed. The passed off the assistant coach selections to the GM.
