Alouettes QB Darian Durant has large bonus due in January

There is a big money decision to be made on Darian Durant.

The 35-year-old veteran quarterback is due a $150,000 roster bonus on Jan. 15, a major salary cap commitment for a player coming off one of the worst seasons of his CFL career.

Durant was traded to the Alouettes for two drafts picks last January, a 2017 fourth rounder and conditional second-round selection in 2018. He then signed a three-year contract extension through the 2019 season, which had a total value of $1.25 million. Durant made $400,000 last season.

The long-time Riders signal caller threw for 3,233 yards, 15 touchdowns against 16 interceptions (second-most in the league) for the Als last season and he was benched multiple times. New Alouettes head coach Mike Sherman was non-committal about naming a No. 1 pivot during his introductory press conference.

“I’m not in a position to determine who the starting quarterback is going to be until we and even after watching tape, I’m not going to be in that position. We’re going to vet this thing out and guys are going to compete and the best quarterback will be our starting quarterback” the 63-year-old said. “At this point that’s up for grabs.”

An off-season payment that large would normally go to quarterbacks who are the unquestioned starter. Sherman clearly wants an open competition. That puts a timeline on deciding about Durant’s future in Montreal – unless the deal is restructured.

Durant spent 11 seasons with the Riders, winning two CFL championships – including the 2013 Grey Cup, held in Regina – and finished with a 58-54 record in 113 starts. He was a West Division all-star in 2009 and 2013.

Far from all-star calibre in 2017, Durant could find out if he’s in Sherman’s plans just a couple weeks into the new year.

Sorry to say they are going to say. Renegotiate your contact or we cut you on the 14th. They can’t afford to take a hit like that on there salary cap.

    Go Rider’s!
    Go CFL!!

Not so EASY. He still has a 2 year contract at
$400,000 per year. May miss bonus but has to be bought out or play.
      Ouch that will hurt!!!

      • TigersCoach // December 23, 2017 at 12:14 pm //

That’s an NHL contract situation Brian. In the CFL you can cut a player with no further obligation essentially voiding the remaining term and making the player a free agent. The only exception is late in the regular season there is varying degrees of ‘balance of season’ contract protection for veteran players.

      • Brian. Nope. CFL contracts are not guaranteed. They cut him and he gets nothing.

  2. Darian will fit in with the Lions – Reed can’t afford to keep him

    • greenenvy? // December 23, 2017 at 2:49 pm //

The Lions don’t need him. Lulay & DD both oft injured. Lulay can play if healthy & showed that last year. Behind the 2 worst OL’s in the league, Durant was awful, Lulay was pretty good. I can see him in Wpg, perhaps, backing up Nichols. The Bombers need someone better than they have. Davis turns 29 & hasn’t shown much. Better off with a younger guy who may have some potential. Durant is better than LeFevour.

      • Jeff Garcia's Agent // December 27, 2017 at 3:06 pm //

Lulay is a free agent and Hervey doesn’t have the same loyalty Wally does towards Lulay. There’s no guarantee Lulay will be back in BC. He may even retire, as he’s said he doesn’t plan to move him family out of the Vancouver area. Could be Jarious Jackson’s new QB coach.

    • Lions??? Don’t think so. If Travis is not good to go then MAAAAAYBE depending on the progress of Alex Ross.

      • Jeff Garcia's Agent // December 27, 2017 at 3:07 pm //

I think Ross will open camp as the primary back up and Hervey will look to the US for third and fourth options.

  3. Brian Johnson – you’re wrong. He either gets the bonus or gets prior to receiving the bonus. There are no guarenteed contracts for players in the CFL. Certainly will not be seeing a “buyout” here.

  4. Sorry “gets the bonus or gets cut prior to receiving the bonus” missed a key word there in my first post.

  5. Interesting. When is the bonus for Collaros due in Hamilton ???

    • BC. February

    • BC. When (not if) Hamilton refuses to pay Collaros his guaranteed money, Collaros becomes a free agent. I think that it is a mistake but the team seems to have already made that decision. Leaves them with the challenge of signing Masoli and/or Manzeil. Collaros ends up in Toronto (unless they sign Franklin) or Montreal or Sask or BC.

    • Bonus for what? 0-8 last season? Choking in the clutch? If I was the 1.5 m dollar man I’d be thanking the TC organization for not suing me on the grounds of impersonating an elite QB.

A $150,000 BONUS for “leading the team” to a 3-15 season! Jim Popp cut Henoc Muamba a couple of years back to avoid a big bonus, and he was a darn good player. Durant, Lulay and even Kevin Glenn are just going to have to accept much lesser contracts. They will be offered backup money ($100,000-$200,000) because that’s what they’ll be, unless they choose to retire.

    • Mark Wallace // December 23, 2017 at 1:22 pm //

No, Collaros has breach of contract if it is guaranteed, or he gets nothing if it isn’t. I think that it is up to what the player and team negotiate. But Collaros is baggage and the Cats will want him moved. He is not the quarterback of the future for them.

      • Or anyone else.

      • Wrong. Under Jones, Collaros would have been as good or better than Masoli. Masoli has Banks, And Fantuz to throw to and an improving Saunders. Collaros had no one and ran for his life with no running game. Collaros will probably move some where else and kick the Cats butts multiple times.

  7. All three Lulay, Glenn, Durant need very good O/L even as a back QB to be effective. My bet is they cut Durant unless he reworks his contract and drops his bonous

  8. greenenvy? // December 23, 2017 at 2:27 pm //

Bye bye Darian. I can’t see even Reed being foolish enough to pay him that bonus – bonuses count against the cap. The $150K can buy you a pretty good FA.

  9. i suspect Ambrosie will essentially hand Manziel to MTL because 1. Sherman recruited him at [email protected], 2. Mtl needs a box office draw. 3. French culture more tolerant of boozing and womanizing even if Johnnue du Football is a reborn Christian now.

    • Geroy Burris // December 23, 2017 at 4:05 pm //

Ambrose has no say in the matter whatsoever. He negotiation rights are held by Hamilton. End of story.

Montreal embraced Chad Johnson, who was twice arrested for domestic assault.

Who on Earth would root for a woman-abusing loser like Johnny Headcase?

      • Boy oh boy there sure are a lot of people casting the1st stone on here.
Just think little dirt bugs; where would you be if you were not given extra chances to improve yourself. Time to grow up and realize that you are no better than the next guy. In fact many are not even as good as the people they put down.
In your infinite wisdom, do you honestly not think that Johnny Manzel knows this is his last chance? You come on here praising the new Commissioner for all that he’s doing. Then you bastardize Manziel who is now has Randy Ambrose as a fan and cheering him in to do well.
Just wait until you need a real chance in life to make a living and support your family. Then some little barf bag that has no say in the matter is dead said against it and becomes high and mighty and verbally loud against you. Man, Karma can be a real bitch

  10. Only potential spot for Durant I see is in a backup role in Winnipeg as an insurance policy behind Nichols while they develop their two young guys further. Only thinking this because of previous relationship with LaPolice. More likely he is just done methinks.

  11. Edward Leslie // December 23, 2017 at 6:16 pm //

If Durant wants to stay in Montreal, he should volunteer to drop the big bonus. I mean a 3-15 record should automatically mean no bonuses for anybody. How does work anyway? Is it $50,000 extra for each of the three wins or is it $10,000 bonus for each of the 15 losses?

  12. If a bonus was promised, it should be paid out. Darian was brought to Montreal under terms of good faith. Teams should not be allowed duck out of their obligation to pay. It’s not all on Darian, as their win and loss record was a team effort. Not all on him. I wish him the best of luck in the future.

  13. No guaranteed contracts in the CFL for players last I heard. Only guarantee I am aware of is during the season if a player is cut after the halfway point of the season which is game #9 the team has top pay him for the rest of the year if he is not picked up by another team. Based on Darian’s year with the Als I see them releasing him prior to Jan.15th like other teams do to avoid paying that bonus. I see him sticking around somewhere in the league but at a much lower price like Lulay did with the Lions.

  14. Why? He sucked. Just like the 1.5 m dollar man in Hamilton. Both should be giving their respective organization a refund.

  15. Kavis Reed should have been fired soley for this ridiculous Durant contract. Durant is a good QB providing the receivers are an inch tall.

  16. Bonus or not, he should be gone. But bonus guarantees he’s toast in MTL.

  17. Question in the cfl can the owner of Montreal make a substantial offer to the owners of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to have Hamilton release Johnny Manziel’s rights. Since Manziel has not entered the league can it go down as club ownership to club ownership.

Also if it has to be an offer from the team does that offer count as part of the salary cap

Would Hamilton turn down let say a $1 million offer from the Montreal owners not the team.

    • BigRedMachine // December 26, 2017 at 12:26 am //

You can trade a neg list player (ie Manziel) the same as you can trade a roster player or draft pick. Therefore Hamilton could trade Manziel to Montreal or anybody else for the highest offer.

  18. Just a follow up the sum of money can be negotiated. I am wondering how this can go down in cfl now that you have 2-3 coaches interested in Manziel.

  19. Time for Kavis Reed to start redeeming himself in the eyes of the fan-base by cutting Darian’s salary for a mediocre performance. He did the same thing to Bear Woods & Chip Cox last season & they had better years than Durant. Knowing Reed, Durant as his signing, his contract won’t be touched.
