Kent Austin: couple other teams also involved in Zach Collaros trade discussions

The Saskatchewan Roughriders weren’t the only team in the mix for quarterback Zach Collaros.

“There are a couple other teams that were also involved,” Ticats vice-president of football operations Kent Austin said on TSN Hamilton 1150. “It came together in the last 24-48 hours, it’s been in the works for a while. It just worked out that the best scenario for both parties was Saskatchewan.

“Other things that are taking shape at this point are also part of this whole scenario. As teams started to inquire and things started to heat up, then it was something we needed to look at to improve our football team.”

What Austin is likely referring to is the team finalizing extensions for quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and Brandon Banks.

The Ticats got a second-round pick in the 2018 CFL draft for Collaros.

  1. It looks like we had to give up something to get him, or we would have lost him, and I’m fine with what we gave up. A #10 pick is a valuable asset, but Collaros is exactly the kind of player we were missing last year, a top tier veteran QB. Collaros fills those needs.

  2. I suspect Montreal and BCwere the other 2

  3. I think you’re probably right. BC getting him would have been the worst case scenario. I’m glad we made the move and now have him.

    You’re fired Kent.

  5. Likely one of the teams that was also in negotiations with the Ticats was the stamps. They do need a reliable QB who can win the big game. The one they have cannot, it has been proven. Sounds like Huff just isnt willing to risk it anymore with BLM and his failures so time to move on and give him some training camp competition. But, it didnt work out, Riders beat Huff to the punch.

    • Ollie are you on crack?!!! WTF!!! You haven’t a facking clue if you think BLM isn’t the best QB in the CFL last season. Yes they lost the GC and yes he tossed a bad INT. But WTF man, they have their division wrapped up practically at labour day.

Hey dude, don’t be a jackass, we already have one.

  7. No doubt in my mind who got the better deal. Green will be the team to beat for a long time. Empty stands for the alcoholic loser. Another Austin screw up.

  8. The Cats got peanuts for a great QB. Jones fleeced Austin. Similar to when Ray was traded from the Eskimos to the Argos.

How so? How many playoff games has Zack helped his club win? How many Grey Cups? Aide from one tremendous season whichvfot derailed by injury, his resume is fairly thin.

He’s on a 500k deal, what were the Cats supposed to get for a guy coming of a mediocre half season and not looking near the player he was before he got hurt?

I like Zach and I hope he does well. Good luck in 2018 and beyond, ZC.

    • It may have been the best deal, especially since other teams knew the alternative scenario was cutting the guy loose. This is far better than potentially seeing him picked up by a division rival (which could still happen depending on the outcome of contract renegotiation and what happens before the season with Riderville QB evaluation)

  9. Where are all the Austin fans he is as bad as a GM is he is as a Coach, a second round pick for A 29 year old QB who helped take his Team to the Grey Cup in 2015,Had his Team at 8-3 and was the leading MOP candidate in 2016 when he got injured. Someone call the RCMP and report the Riders for this theft, If Zach bounces Back with Their Defence and Receivers they will have a real shot at the Cup.

I’m absolutely not a KA fan and the sooner he’s gone the better … but you are off a year in your recounting of history …. Cats lost the GC with Collaros as QB in 2014: Collaros was having a MOP season prior to his knee injury in 2015. Cats absolutely sucked in 2016 even after Collaros returned from injury midway through the season. KA should never have been extended for 3yrs for mega bucks after that stinker of a season.

  10. Cats vs. Riders in the 2018 Grey Cup – should be an interesting game….until the refs give it to Sask on a bad call!

  11. This just proves that Austin is clueless in club management. Three teams interested and all you get is a second rounder? Clueless dipshit, still won’t take responsibility for his 2017 campaign.

  12. Such an optimistic…give things a chance we got June we are about to sign Masoli and banks to extensions per report .We gonna have tolliver back in at receiver this year we have a good core bunch of guys already signed . I’m sure they will look long and hard at the secondary in free agency ..jezus people show some positivity and relax on the manziel bashing. Masoli is #1 I highly doubt johnny m is gonna come down here and steal his job in camp so he is back up and grooms in the backup role
That’s even if he makes it through camp even if he get a half decent contract it will most likely have no gaurenteed money unless he makes it through camp so everyone hold on to your tighty whities let’s show our team some confidence they are moving in the right direction some of you are starting to depress me !

I belive Chris Jones got his Man. In the past Chris Jones commented on his frustration on defending against Zach. It will be interesting to see what happens. My Argos surprised me with winning the Grey Cup so anything can happen in the CFL. Ticat fans can relax now knowing Zach is in the West.

  14. Sea Of Dead you are correct and I knew the correct years but my emotions got the best of me and I could not wait to Slam Austin, I actually think we traded a pretty good QB for what a second round pick.
