Pick traded to Riders for Darian Durant turns into Zach Collaros

Darian Durant has turned into Zach Collaros for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Durant’s rights were sent from the Riders to Montreal last January for a fourth-round pick in the 2017 CFL draft and second-rounder in 2018. That last selection was sent to Hamilton for Zach Collaros on Wednesday.

The two-time Grey Cup champion pivot threw for 3,233 yards, 15 touchdowns against 16 interceptions (second-most in the league) for the Als last season and he was benched multiple times. Durant spent 11 seasons with the Riders and finished with a 58-54 record in 113 starts.

Collaros is six years younger and took Hamilton to the Grey Cup in 2014. The 29-year-old has lost 12 straight starts and is 24-27 overall as a starter in his career, but some evaluators around the CFL believe he can still be a franchise calibre player.

Seems appropriate. A trade for two “moderately successful” qbs….

I’ll buy that for a dollar.

Happy New Year Horsie. Thought you were gone for good.

Strange, Rider’s seems bent on spending huge $$$$ for another mediocre QB. All three QB’s each have a rating around 65% and a terrible Interception to TD ratio. Things that make me go Hummmmm!

Zach’s INT ratio was only bad last season when he had less than 2 seconds to get rid of the ball after it was snapped. Prior to last season it was 2.4-1 TD/INT, which is better than both Reilly and BLM produced last season. You’re also assuming he’ll continue into 2018 under his current contract, which is a terribly misguided assumption.

Why would Zach take any less $$$, correct me if I’m wrong but when you trade for a player under contract, doesn’t his contract follow him? All QB’s need to move the ball in less then 2 seconds otherwise they tend to eat a lot of turf. Not to mention Riders are not the best at protecting their QB’s. So unless Jones has a bag of magic Zach will remain a so so QB, I believe Bridge has a slightly better completion % for 75% less money.

        • the contract statement is very easy to comment on there Blue Boy. If Collaros doesnt take a contract cut that suits the riders payroll structure, they will cut him. Then he can sign anywhere he wants and he has no contract at all so he will end up being reduced in pay no matter what. Or the alternative is no one wants him for what he wants to get paid and he is out of a job.

    • hey blue boy, no one says the riders are spending huge $$ for Collaros. Now way they will pay him what his contract says he should be paid. Riders are right now renegotiating the contract….dont forget they can release him and he gets nothing and the riders have lost the draft pick but no one says the riders will pay him what he wants. They will pay him what he is worth and what they can afford, end of story.

Come on Blue… you don’t think they’re going to pay him $500k do you? And Zach isn’t moderately successful, he had a terrible year last year under Austin. If you want to talk moderate looks at Nichols or Drew Willy.

      • Blue Rules // January 3, 2018 at 3:49 pm //

True green, funny you mention Willy, Nichols. Stats for QB’s who played 7 games or more in 2017

        ZC pass 62.8%, effic 81.1, INT % 2.6
        DW pass 68.4%, effic 81.6, INT % 2.5
        MN pass 71.1 tied for 1st, effic 103.8 2nd (to Bridge), INT % 1.4 2nd (to Masoli)

Zach is the far below the average in everything except $$$$$$, try again!!

  5. another point was that apparently his contract with Hamilton was front end loaded so maybe he wasn’t the highest paid player last year unless you averaged out his salary over the length of his contract. Either way you know Jones will renegotiate his deal and add some years so that he will probably be in the 350 to 400 range which is good for a QB if he starts. If Bridge turns out better then ZC gets less. Good trade for the Riders.

Riders will likely extend his contract to 2 years plus an option for around $400K per year, play him 2 years then cut him.

400 k a year hhaha not going to happen maybe 300 per at the most but more likely 250 with bonus
