Saskatchewan acquired quarterback Zach Collaros on Wednesday and focus immediately shifted to the over $500,000 salary he’s due to make in 2018.
“We’ve already started those discussions with his agent. We’ve had conversations with his agent about his contract. We feel positive that those discussions are going in the right direction,” assistant vice president of football operations Jeremy O’Day said.
“It’s up to us to see if we’re going to be able to make it work structurally within our salary cap.”
O’Day admitted the trade conversations had been ongoing for a while. The first time might have been back in late August.
“It started to become a reality closer to New Years. Credit to Coach Jones who had all the communication with Hamilton,” O’Day said.
“Late last night we were able to talk to Zach. All indications were that he was happy to be a Roughrider.”
The Riders signed Canadian quarterback Brandon Bridge to a one-year extension in December and veteran pivot Kevin Glenn is under contract from 2018.
“That’s a great problem to have,” O’Day said about the team’s quarterback situation. “We traded for him for a reason, but we also signed our other quarterbacks for a reason as well.”
