Riders in discussions to renegotiate Zach Collaros’ contract: O’Day

Saskatchewan acquired quarterback Zach Collaros on Wednesday and focus immediately shifted to the over $500,000 salary he’s due to make in 2018.

“We’ve already started those discussions with his agent. We’ve had conversations with his agent about his contract. We feel positive that those discussions are going in the right direction,” assistant vice president of football operations Jeremy O’Day said.

“It’s up to us to see if we’re going to be able to make it work structurally within our salary cap.”

O’Day admitted the trade conversations had been ongoing for a while. The first time might have been back in late August.

“It started to become a reality closer to New Years. Credit to Coach Jones who had all the communication with Hamilton,” O’Day said.

“Late last night we were able to talk to Zach. All indications were that he was happy to be a Roughrider.”

The Riders signed Canadian quarterback Brandon Bridge to a one-year extension in December and veteran pivot Kevin Glenn is under contract from 2018.

“That’s a great problem to have,” O’Day said about the team’s quarterback situation. “We traded for him for a reason, but we also signed our other quarterbacks for a reason as well.”

  1. I’m glad to hear that discussions have been going on for a while. That should mean that they’ve agreed on the big issues and a deal is close. I expected this but it’s still reassuring to hear. I think this probably means the end of Glenn’s time as a player in SK, but I’d be happy to have him as a coach. If he has one more year left, however, maybe we should trade him to Edmonton to be their backup this year.

  2. Glenn can become the riders QB coach, it will suit him.

  3. Glenn can’t win the big one as a player – maybe he can coach to win the big one !!

  4. Why would a team with no intention of making the cap care what they pay him?

No one missed the 2016 cap and the details for 2017 are not out but thank you for that bit of wisdom.

      • No wisdom involved, well maybe for a slider fan it is super wisdom. Winter’s cold, grass is green, slider’s cheat….even you must see the pattern

  5. So does Glenn lead the extra practice team now?

  6. Glenn will be tasked to go “fetch” Gainor’s dog food by Jones because that is a task that is too lowly for the Slider’s Super Boss (Jones)…master of many job titles, expert at none.

  7. Sliders ?

    A grade 7 insult ?

  8. As much as DD was loved in Riderville, this is pretty much a DD trade for Collaros. Trading DD got us a 2nd round draft choice from Montreal which is now in the hands of the Tiger-Cats. What’s tough to swallow is that this 2nd round pick will be 10th overall in a fairly deep draft. Still this was genius by Jones. Will Collaros be trade bait for Franklin? He’s 5 years younger!
