Former Bombers offensive lineman Travis Bond bound for Riders

Bond. Travis Bond.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have shaken up – but not stirred – their offensive line by adding American Travis Bond on a one-year contract, per sources.

The 27-year-old started 16 games for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last season and was a CFL all-star at guard in 2016. Bond has tremendous size at 6-foot-7, 360 pounds. The Riders starting left tackle last season, Bruce Campbell is currently a free agent.

Bond was a seventh-round pick, 214th overall by the Vikings in 2013. He spent parts of two NFL seasons with Minnesota, Carolina and St. Louis playing in two games.

The Riders released American offensive lineman Derek Dennis on Tuesday.

  1. Darn…Thats a good signing. I won’t be like Rider fans and say he’s crappy, now that he’s gone from the Bombers. I think the only reason was due to the ratio. Seems like the Bombers and Riders are loading up for big years.

The bombers and riders look like forces to be reckoned with

Yeah, but which Bond will they get? A good one like Sean Connery or Roger Moore or a crappy one like Timothy Dalton or Daniel Craig??

    • As you don’t know good Bonds from bad, its all relative isn’t it.

You don’t like Daniel Craig? Really? Wow… I think he’s been awesome. huh… well there ya go. (Big fan of Sean & Roger too. Could never get used to Remington Steele)

  4. Can he play tackle? Would we move Labatte to tackle?

    • Jeff Garcia's Agent // February 15, 2018 at 1:18 pm //

LaBatte may move to Centre and they can have an open competition between Bladek and Dyakowski at RG. Jones says he’s still looking for a starting LT and have been in contact with Campbell’s agent. And I highly doubt the plan is to have Clark as the starting C. The OL instantly improved when LaBatte moved to Centre after Clark was hurt, so I look for that to be the likely move.

  5. Labatte can play tackle in a pinch but that is certainly not his natural position, nor his best position. All the reviews I have read on Bond say that he has played tackle but does not have the mobility nor the footwork to be a good tackle, certainly not a blind side tackle.

    • Rush ends in the CFL have gotten faster and more athletic. Good mobility and quickness are important at left tackle.

      • That’s certainly a concern. Coleman had a much better year last year and if he has found his footing in this league we could also switch him back to LT and play Bond at RT. I’m not seeing why we signed Bond unless we plan on trying him at tackle.

  6. They can try Coleman at left tackle but he is a barely serviceable right tackle. A lot of pressure came on the right side of the line last year past Coleman and Dyakowski. Different footwork to go from the right tackle to left tackle. I don’t think Coleman is good enough to play blind side.

  7. Agree, Coleman is only serviceable as a right tackle but just. Best thing I can say about Coleman is he is tall. If they move Coleman to left tackle, Collaros will get killed! Too bad St. John doesn’t work as the right tackle spot ia there for the taking but.. Bond right tackle??

  8. I was not a Coleman fan two years ago. In fact I didn’t think we should bring him back, but he was a lot better this year, and for whatever reason the team has always been high on him.

The other wild card here is that Jones has been working his butt off at FA camps down south, and we don’t know what he’s found. If he has a couple of stud LT prospects lined up that would change this picture entirely.

  9. In an interview on Riderville posted today Jones said that he thinks Bond can play “multiple positions both inside and outside.”

  10. Bond is definitely big enough but if he is not quick enough and mobile enough then Collaros is going to get killed back there.

    • Paul Bomber // February 14, 2018 at 3:54 pm //

He’s got excellent foot work… plus it’s a 15 minute hike around the guy. Whatever Collaros has to be worried about, Mr. Bond isn’t one of them.
I’m not crazy about him leaving – he’s a strong lineman and there was no problem with his play, it’s just that Wpg thinks they can replace him w/Patrick Neufeld from Canuckistan. But I’m not so sure he’s as durable as Bond. We get 1 linemen go down & then that line loses a step. Last year, Neufeld as the 6th lineman helped make the Blue O Line (arguably) the best in the league.

We’ve also got Couture and Spooner as Cdn on-line depth so there is good potential behind Neufeld. Now we just need Geoff Gray to come home

Bond offers a lesser cap number than Dennis but we don’t lose size. Jonesy will coach him up and the Saskatchewan crowd will remind him of his college days

  12. i think the riders will resign campbell and go with 3 amreicans on the oline with signing of messam they can play 3 americans on the oline

    • I don’t know about the ratio situation. They are short at DB LB on defence and the offensive line is still up in the air. The riders have 3 good American RB now. I wonder who will go . I guess it all depends on the injuries.

  13. Here is a almost beyond hope curve ball, could Ben Heenan be talked into coming back and playing for say 1 year. Heenan was an outstanding tackle and a Sask born Cdn to boot. Sell him on 1 more CUP run , a do it for Blue thing!!! Other out of the box thinking is NY giants are to be shaking up the perceived WORST NFL o-line , does that mean Weyburn born Jones is available at centre and could he be convinced to play 1 year for the Riders !!! Making Clarke a possible move back to guard, and maybe the ole Flip an American Oline-man in trade say 1/2 into preseason
