Johnny Manziel’s agent says there is “very real interest” from NFL teams after The Spring League

According to Johnny Manziel ‘s agent Erik Burkhardt there is “very real interest” from NFL teams after seeing Manziel practice and play in two Spring League games.

Manziel went 9 of 15 for 83 yards and one touchdown in the first Spring League game.

In game two Manziel completed 10 of 16 passes for 188 yards with an interception while adding 27 yards and two touchdowns on six rushes.

“If it’s meant to be it will be, and if not (in the NFL) I’ll find a place to play football somewhere – wherever that may be,” Manziel told the Houston Chronicle.

Might that place be New England. Manziel wore a Patriots hoodie recently prompting plenty of speculation.

BarStool Sports’ Jerry Thornton added to it.

I heard from someone I trust who says there are internal discussions going on right now in Foxboro about the possibility of inviting Johnny Football to camp.

The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner has said he would go to the Patriots in a “heartbeat.” It appears Manziel is going to exhaust all NFL possibilities and if nothing comes to fruition turn his attention to the CFL where he has a guaranteed contract offer.

The Ticats own Manziel’s CFL negotiation list rights and Hamilton had general manager Eric Tillman at The Spring League to watch the celebrity quarterback.

At last — another Manziel story. I was beginning to wonder if he’d dropped off the face of the earth. I need my weekly fix of Johnny Football.

    • Me too! OMG..just like I need my weekly fix of the Kardashians, Bieber, Mariah…oh, wait a minute…did I just hear the toilet flush?

  2. So annoying… Ti-Cats could have locked him down. He would have jumped at $350k a year.

    • I totally agree. They likely could have had him for even $275K

      • Not even that much was needed. He would have signed for $225K.

      • Not sure why people are confident in such a low number.

Manziel is quoted as deferring to his agent, Burkhardt. He is quoted as saying he wants a fair deal that is defined as “on par with what Hamilton has paid their QB in recent years, despite not having much on-field success.”

Recent years as well as not much success implies Collaros who reportedly was over $500K until being moved.

Until forced – would these two really drop $150K to $325K off the contract?

Particularly if accepting a Hamilton offer locks him out of the NFL for two years?

        • Manziel knows Hamilton has Masoli penciled in as the starter. Masoli’s contract for 2018 is $235K + incentives. Manziel being somewhat reasonable, would be willing to take SLIGHTLY less. The SLIGHTLY part is the unknown.

It was reported that the Ti-Cats offered about 150K. Manziel also said he was close to signing a CFL contract. That means we know the numbers discussed were in this range, and the sides were not $150-$325K apart. They are either relatively close or as Drew Edwards speculated might already have a deal in principle should Manziel forgo his ambition to play in the NFL this year.

Hamilton would not continuously waste resources maintaining contact and scouting Manziel if the difference between them was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    • What did they offer him?

Word is he turned down 500k which is what coleros was making

You know, if the Ti-Cats HAD signed him for 350 k and there was the slightest whiff of interest from the Patriots or any NFL team, I think he’d be looking for ways not to report. Just my sense.

We DON”T care. Enough of this chump.

    • You have a mouse in your pocket?

WE care, he could be another Flutie in the CFL

      • Lennywasout // April 20, 2018 at 3:34 pm //

He could also be as brutal as his time in the NFL and we waste our time. I in all hopes want him to sign with the NFL!

  5. Cool.

  6. Tailgate YYC // April 20, 2018 at 1:10 pm //

    Who the F cares……..

  7. Based on his performance it can’t be at the QB position.

  8. The only thing holding up the deal is burkhardt’s fee because we all know Johnny will play for free!

    • Robert Shmigelsky // April 20, 2018 at 2:35 pm //

He might as well play in the Arena football league. They only pay $250 dollars a game. That’s not much more than free.

  9. Who the hell gives a rats ass about this train wreck hes never gonna amount to jack shit again especially in the cfl you guys need some real stories to print

    • He could be another Flutie. He may not have been great in just two spring league games but give him a camp and a CFL pre-season and he will light up our league.

      • Sixbeamers // April 20, 2018 at 2:19 pm //

“He will light up our league.” Sounds like a line scripted by June Jones.

      • MJ Bandit // April 20, 2018 at 10:32 pm //

Let Johnny Superstar end up on some CFL team – for minimum CFL back-up QB wage and let him compete for real in a TC; he might “light up” the league or he might be another Flutie. This should be determined by real TC competition – and NOT by handing a job & playing-time to some all-american hero that some CFL moron decision makers is all ga ga over. Not sure June Jones or Mavis Reed are that stupid – but they might be ?

    • so, Clayton, how do you really feel about him? Don’t hold anything back! LOL

  10. Please don’t darken Flutie’s name by using them in the same sentence. Only one thing worse than a hack and that is a hack with an attitude.

  11. There’s a lot of unrealistic expectations of his spring league numbers/performance. He never played with these guys before and hardly had any practice with his “team.” CFL starting pivots wouldn’t fair much better in the same circumstances. I think what’s more important to the NFL teams are tings like Naylor’s TSN interview where he displayed an appropriate professional attitude. That he can come into a team, expect nothing , and work hard…. That’s what will get him an NFL trg camp contract.

    • Why would an NFL team care about Naylor’s interview when they can work him out and get the story from the horse’s mouth?

Surely their own staff’s evaluation matters more, n’est pas?

Time will tell … but this seems more to me like NFL interest is minimal where the agent is trying to keep up a facade that hopefully keeps a few buck in the CFL contract.

Please please please take an NFL job holding a clipboard. Right where you belong

  13. If all athletes had this goys attitude, there would be no sports

  14. Lennywasout // April 20, 2018 at 3:40 pm //

I would love for all Johnny articles to please stop. If and when he signs with an NFL team(cough…cough) or shows up to a CFL training camp, then write stories. All this debate is such a waste of everyone’s time especially 3Down…

  15. Enough – Manziel at this point please do anything other than sign with the CFL. Spring League Game 1 : 9 for 15 for a whopping 83 yards. Game 2 : 10 for 16 for 188 yards. He was not 14 for 15 and 15 for 16. If there is NFL interest please sign and stop torturing the 3 people left who still want you to come to Canada. At first I was excited by the prospect but he is STILL an Arrogant Goof. What is the argument exactly regarding his maturity? That he may be slightly less of an Arrogant Goof than he was before – maybe? He disrespects the CFL at every turn.

  16. Not much news here. What do you expect his agent to say?

  17. Had they signed him to Starter money. Ted Laurent and a couple other vets would be playing elsewhere.

    Count your blessings.

  18. Chris AB // April 20, 2018 at 5:58 pm //

he will make a truly awesome 3rd string, clipboard carrying, QB in the NFL ….I doubt there is any real NFL interest….of course his agent says there is, in an attempt to generate interest….notice he doesn’t say any specific teams or GM’s are interested

  19. Watch the video, he looks brutal. Sacks fumbles weak throws.

  20. Steve J. // April 20, 2018 at 8:01 pm //

    Go f*** yourself, Manzeil.

  21. Ari Katz // April 20, 2018 at 9:16 pm //

No NFL team will take a chance on Manziel until he comes here for at least a couple of years. Erik Burkhardt is dreaming and talking nonsense. I am surprised that the Ticats would not have insisted that he be present at the spring mini camp on Tuesday . One never knows but with the NFL draft around the corner and NFL teams drafting younger quarterbacks , Manziel’s options have decreased.

  22. “Very real”

No need for the additional adjective. If something is real, saying it’s “very real” doesn’t make it more real. Which makes me believe the agent is being hyperbolic about Johnny Cent-Sign’s prospects.

I wish the guy well, but this drama is making the “reality” TV series Survivor seem like a fresh idea. Or maybe I should reference Big Brother Canada, given the other burning news of the day.

  23. ambrosie meddled. could have been here last fall.

  24. Yawn…so how about those Avalanche? Think they can take out Suban and the boys?

  25. Perfect fit for the already mangled Calgary locker room. Let John Boy get a taste of the Stampede and he’ll be a hit with all the other scum on that team.

  26. Manziel went 33 completions against 45 attempts for 372 yards in only his 5th NFL start ever against the Pittsburgh Steelers…doing so with the awful Cleveland browns …ya..the kid’s no good…
