Blast from the past: two-time Grey Cup champion LB Ejiro Kuale attends Riders free agent camp

American linebacker Ejiro Kuale last played a down in the CFL in 2013, but the linebacker is still chasing the pro football dream.

The 34-year-old was at the Riders free agent workout in Florida on Saturday. According to Saskatchewan play-by-play man Rod Pedersen, Kuale was injured early and forced to the sidelines.

Kuale played three seasons in Toronto, winning a Grey Cup with the Argos in 2012. He played 48 games for the Argonauts making 92 defensive tackles and 18 special teams tackles.

The Louisiana State product signed with the Riders during the 2013 season in which the green and white won the CFL championship on home turf. In nine games that year, Kuale made eight tackles during his seven starts.

They do need LB’s & would fit in with oldtimers Hughes & Johnson on defence. Realistically can’t see him making main camp.

  2. I hope Ryan Raftis has ordered lots of BenGay. What is this team doing? They are clearly going all in this year. There is absolutely no long term plan.
    I have a couple theories
1- Chris Jones simply doesn’t care about Craig Reynolds plan and wants to win now for his own resume.
2- The riders realize the more turnover from year to year they have the more jerseys they will sell, That’s why all my Stamps jersey’s have no numbers and no names.

      Yet you have several…….lol

    • Advice from Janice // April 22, 2018 at 12:22 pm //

Just shut up Red. This is an open walk on camp. Your fricken uncle could walk on to try out if he wanted too.
What R U such a jack ass. A pure ignorant ass talking jack ass.
Worry about who is or is not showing up at Stamps camps. Your football knowledge resembles that of a 1st year beginner. So please do everyone a favour and close that pie hole. As it’s pure dogma propaganda that comes out of it. The word disputable is 3 levels above what your demeanour would be rated.

      • Janice, A free Agent camp doesn’t mean anyone can show up the day of, with sneakers and jogging pants and try out, some players are invited and others can contact and register with the team, but the latter are still vetted to make sure they are a viable candidate to play pro football. Any team that would allow my fricken uncle (my youngest uncle is 66 and in failing health) to show up and try out would be a joke of an organization.

        • pay attention. It states that it’s a free agent workout. It was open to anyone who was willing to pay a small fee. Those who impress will be invited to the mini camp so, as usual you are wrong.

    • No plan never was one

    • True Green // April 22, 2018 at 12:55 pm //

It costs nothing to try someone out at mini camp, there’s no commitment. Why wouldn’t you see what he’s got? If the media focussed the same attention on every cfl ta this wouldn’t even be an article. All teams try out a wide variety of experienced players.

      • Actually, it does cost something, teams representatives fly, eat , rent hotels, cars and fields and get insured/bonded. Do you think they want to waste their time on individuals they don’t think could viably be on the team?

        • True Green // April 22, 2018 at 9:37 pm //

I’m talking in general terms. The team has already committed to those expenses. The decision to bring in an ex pro athlete who’s played in the cfl costs them nothing. The purpose of many of these camps is to turn over stones and see what talent they find. The decision to try out Ejiro is a viable one.

  3. Rider4life // April 22, 2018 at 10:46 am //

Hey Red just because you live in the basement and use bengay and put of shape dosent mean athletes at 30 plus are out of shape. If he was going to Calgary you would be praising him lol. But you have such a hate for riders is unreal. As your saying about your jerseys you can’t remember who’s playing on stamps team to remember their names to put on a jersey lol. The rider fans as most fans do know who their players are and support them all and put a name and number on their jersey of their favorite player. So what if every fan has a favorite player they support the whole team buying the jersey. If he makes it great if not he tried better then sitting in a basement full of hate.

    • Being out of shape and needing Bengay are not hand in hand. In fact the fitter you are the more wear you put on you body.

The fact is, this player would not be coming to the Stamps at this point of the season, our camps are full of young players so wew can continue the pipeline of greatness. Think how old the rider defense is getting!

      • Huff's Neighbor // April 22, 2018 at 11:07 am //

I am not sure why you would post. You’ve always been fat and lazy and not too bright, but feel the need to speak of athletes you couldn’t keep up to in your best dreams as if you’re better. Being uglier and stupid does not count. Simply slither back to mom’s lap and let the adults talk. There is something clinically wrong with you. The Riders win the west. The Stumps are on the downward and it looks good on them.

        • Whiteout, ( aka Blue rules) // April 22, 2018 at 11:13 am //

@ Huff’s, try it again, but this time don’t hold back on your feelings. Tell red how you really feel.

        • I’m sure a great athlete like you is getting ready for training camp

          • Google child trauma academy. It might help you understand what happened to you in the womb and as an infant leading to the lack of full brain development that has resulted in your adult life

      • True Green // April 22, 2018 at 1:07 pm //

So your comment “hoping Ryan Raftis has ordered lots of bengay” is because “the fitter you are the more wear in your body”. Why was your original comment meant as an insult then. You talk yourself into a corner every post.

One last comment. I’m a competitive 42 year old athlete. I am quite familiar with a variety of muscle/joint rubs. I can tell you the only people using bengay is your grandma. If that’s the best you could come up with then stick to your armchair sports and video games and leave the athletic comments to those who’ve thrown a ball or two.

        • Sorry True Green, maybe you are more rehearsed than I on creams and ointments. Perhaps you could make much better recommendations to Ryan Rafti than I could.
Regardless of who would make a better athletic therapist, my point is very well made and understood 🙂

          • True Green // April 22, 2018 at 9:41 pm //

My point, that you have no valid experience, is very well made. You are correct that I could provide Ryan with better advice than you, but that’s not not saying much.

      • The pipeline of Greatness? Is that what you call losing twice in a row? The only time people remember who won second place is when they manage to do it twice in a row.

  4. Have you not figured out yet that in this day and age of 1 year deals there can be no long term fool proof plan. A championship team can be built every off season from the available free agent talent. Stamps should try to build one for a change.Football Ops have 0 ability to retain there team year to year if players are successful. They will want what they think they are worth and with the Cap teams are at a loss to retained what they build. Man you are stunned sometimes. It is now a build for today world as there is no control over tomorrow.

    • Wideout- The theory that 1 year contracts makes long term building harder or impossible is a fallacy. In the last 2 off seasons Calgary has retained every single player they’ve wanted except Tommy Campbell, and that’s because Montreal had money to spend. The CFLPA’s plan has back fired, while it gives the dreamers a quick out to pursue the NFL, it actually hurts other players by saturating the market place with good players every off season, supply and demand lowers the cost! Don’t be surprised to see this gone n the next CBA.

      • The reason they kept them is no one wanted the Chokers. Jones took a couple who had their A game in the Cup and the rest are not required or the answer to building a CHAMPIONSHIP team.

        • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 11:56 am //

Truth is Messam was one of the guys who threw BLM under the bus & his stats compared to other backs weren’t good. Sure he had the yards but at an average under 5 per carry, not good. It’s one thing if you give a guy the ball 170 times to get 1,000, quite another if you have to give it to him 215 times. Not good receiving either. Only getting 5 yds a touch after catching the ball, when he catches it. Considering Messam had 158 YAC yards of his 183 receiving yards, that means the ball was in the air for 25 yds on his 33 catches or the avg pass to him was 1.3 yds. Yet he only caught 75% of his targets. That’s why the TSN stats guy calls him the worst receiver of all the RB’s in the league. If that’s Messam’s A GAME, Wideout, you’re welcome to him. Even I can catch a ball if I’m standing less than 2 yds away on average. I mean, good God man, Harris caught 105 out of 128 targets. RB’s pretty much get dump passes & are asked to make up the yards on their own. These aren’t guys being asked to catch rockets in tight windows 20 yards downfield.

          • True Green // April 22, 2018 at 1:18 pm //

I agree with you Envy. I’ve never been a gun Messam fan although I’ll admit when his run game is on it is on! But inconsistent and poor with his hands. And if that’s true about Bo he should have kept his mouth shut, just like he should have kept it shut when Finch got arrested.

        • lol
I back a valid argument to you initial claim and you come back with the typical crap.
So who are these A game Grey Cup performers the riders took from us?

    • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 11:43 am //

Well, every off season someone “builds” a 5th place team, a 4th place team, 3 non-playoff teams etc & YET some teams have sustainability & keep their core players year to year. Only ONE team actually “builds” a championship team, if you want to call it that. If what you say is true then why do some teams have multi-year non-playoff years, especially in a league where 2/3 of the teams make the playoffs? Why do some year after year finish near the top? After “building” a Grey Cup team in 2013, as most people agree & even Rider fans have attested to, why did Taman just not “build” one for 2014 instead of leaving a team doomed to the bottom for 3 years? Surely at least a playoff team in one of those 3 years would be a natural from your comments. Life is not that simple. This year we have a Wpg article titled “Grey Cup or Bust”, Redemption in Calgary, Win the Cup at home in Edmonton, Jones’ time to win in year 3 (thus the Taman plan this year loading up with geezers), & win to bring the fans back in BC. EVERYONE’s going to win the Cup in the West & let’s not forget the East, winners the past 2 years. So, yeah, that thing about building it in one year – good luck.

      • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 12:07 pm //

Correction. The distance in the air after you take away YAC (or yards he carried the ball after the catch) was 25 yards on 33 catches which is 0.76 yards as the average throw in the air. In other words, there was a lot of throws off to the side just ahead of the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage – practically a handoff, short laterals ahead of him. Likely his 11 misses must have been a little long for him (one would hope). That’s pathetic especially in light of guys with far more targets & longer throws to them catch so many more balls. Poor Jerome. Jerome is pretty much a guy you bulldoze for a yard or two here & there. You may see his salary as a bargain but when you consider what you’re getting, a very one-dimensional player at his age, not worth the money. But that’s me.

      • Ummm a season ending injury to Doubles ELBOW, from a questionable hit —some see as dirty and after a whistle blown in error by an league official the whistle– kind of derailed the Rider train in 2014 and on —-Unfortunately for Darian that hit put the kibosh on what might of been a career worthy of a HoF look by the time it was done , its all rainbows and puppies speculation regarding what might have been . However one thing is FOR SURE !! DD sure had the Stampeders # come meaningful PLAYOFF games!!!! So the Riders post 2013 did have a plan for success they just didn’t count for the Devastating injuries DD had in back to back years that effectively ended his career. I am left to wonder how teams like the Esk’s /Stamps would fair if the same happened in BACK to BACK years for their franchise qb’s. Though admittedly Reily has done well after his knee.

        • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 2:33 pm //

The Riders in 2014 were more about 7 or 8 players leaving/retiring. Dressler went south as did Sheets, Evans & Shologan went in the draft, Schmitt was gone & so on. Too many to list. Those were big losses. Sometimes stats can be misleading. While true they started 8-2 with Durant, the 2 best teams that year were Edmonton & Calgary by far. Calgary only lost 3 games to the rest of the league as did Edmonton to the rest of the league not named Calgary. That 8-2 record was built on 3 wins by 6 points or less vs Wpg, 1 win vs each of the East & 1 win over BC – not one of these teams finished over .500. They hadn’t played the Alberta teams & only won one meaningless last game of the season vs Edmonton where they rested players for the playoffs. Those who blame losing Durant for waylaying their Grey Cup chances are dismissing the fact that their roster was decimated & they hadn’t played the 2 best teams yet. Durant was a big loss but, even with him, the Riders were not in the same league as the other two. Their 2 losses were to Argos & BC by a wide margin & these weren’t powerhouse clubs.

        • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 2:45 pm //

To address your point about being without Reilly or Mitchell. We don’t know where the Stamps would be without Mitchell but my guess is he is the one guy they can ill afford to lose. With Glenn in Edmonton, now I don’t think Edmonton would be in bad shape although Reilly would be a big loss. But last time they lost him, the Esks went 6-2 after he was injured in the opening game vs Toronto in 2015 until his return. Nichols played some but Franklin was the guy who stepped in & made Nichols expendable. He was traded before the season ended. But that team had weapons that made life easy for Franklin. He had the CFL’s top 2 receivers in Walker & Bowman to throw to. It’s not just about the QB’s. I still think if Chamblain had supported Brett Smith like Jones supported Franklin, things could have been a little different in Regina in 2014.

        • Right,,, Blame the refs for all the riders woes!! 🙁 🙁

Actually, Calgary did lose a starting QB 2 years in a row!!!!!! 2012/2013…..we did pretty good.

The was no plan for success, regardless of Durant’s health the riders had to purge players due to unsustainable salaries.

Mr Red the riders are a inclusive team. If you wanted to come out they would would let you. Jones is looking (no stones left ). I hope we can find a younger guy. Who knows maybe he is for depth. Mr Red that could be you.

    • “No stone unturned” is euphemistic speak for , “I don’t have an effective scouting tragedy or plan.

    • Rider fan – true story, once you’ve put the pads on its in your blood for life. Can’t fault a guy for giving it a shot. He appears to be in good physical shape. May or may not make it, but I bet he’s having a blast out on the field like old times.

  12. Same old crap, Mr.Red talks, Riderville trips over itself trying to respond.

  13. Just saying // April 22, 2018 at 12:37 pm //

Anyone can tryout red, they pay there money and give it a shot. The riders don’t discriminate.

    • Great Point I was just posting the same but ya beat me to it !!!!

    • Yes I’m afraid the riders do discriminate, in fact every team does. Pro sports is one of the most discriminating professions their is.

  14. Good for Ejiro Kuale, he paid his $100.00 to take possibly one last shot at possibly extending living his dream as a professional athlete , he should be commended for his courage to do so. For those that have spend tons of time and effort in trashing players like Carter , maybe you should give credit where credit is DUE , her is a past PRO CHAMPIONSHIP athlete ( yeap maybe he was a marginal player on that squad, but the POINT IS he had enough talent to MAKE THAT team ) So Great JOB haters in calling this GUY down and the organization that has given him this oppprtunity , Hopefully again it YOUR HATRED of anything Riders that drives your comments on this player , and you would have a different point of view if YOUR team had given this chance !!! IF NOT then your probably that kind of person that makes NEGATIVE comments about situations like the Humbolt accident behind closed doors out of the pubic eye !!!! but says something different when EYE are UPON Ya !!!!

    • Guys, come on!
Yes I understand they pay $100.00, it’s the same for Calgary. Do you know why? It’s because teams have to spend time and money vetting these registries to make sure they are real candidates. They check with agents, colleges, another scouts etc to see who they are. Only players who a team feels can potentially fit into their team will get a tryout. Do you really think they would let just anyone show up and tryout just because they slapped down $100.00 large? What an incredible waste of time that would be.
If you think the riders do that, I would really question the integrity of your organization.

  15. Just saying // April 22, 2018 at 1:03 pm //

And he has two grey cup rings, how many do you have red?

  16. MR. Green // April 22, 2018 at 2:18 pm //

I don’t care how old he is. When the season starts, the best players will play. Every team has turnover, especially the CFL. Chris Jones respects athletes an will always listen. In the end, Coach will always search, looking for special athletes. Even if he has the 3 best QB’s in the world, he won’t rest looking for another good one. You never k ow who will walk on and impress, even older vets can have career years and player of the year seasons.

  17. WTF is Chris Jones wasting his time with a washed out scrub like Kuale at mini camp?

Might as well have invited Mike McCullough too – – at least he’s a NI.

It’s an embarrassment to see the kind of deadwood Jones continues to bring in off the scrap heap. Reminds me of the Caesar Rayford and Vince Young signings.

    • greenenvy? // April 22, 2018 at 3:03 pm //

Hey, he has to pay his $100 to get in. Jones needs the cash. Slush fund for fines.

    • Or if he really wants to waste time he could bring in Ricky Foley. I hear his brother is still contacting all G.M.’s looking for a try out spot.

Second of all anyone paying the entry fee can try out. Good you don’t get signed you don’t go to camp and you are out the $100.00.
    Nothing more to this story

  24. Sask need all the help they can get on defense they have no QB Collaros fumbles hangs on to the ball too long throws a pick 6 every game gets sacked or pass knocked down and very injury prone good luck with that long season in Sask with no QB

    • Well, then they bring in Bridge who destroyed every team last year. Where’s this big need for defense?

  25. Just finished a drive on the yellowhead, and I see this guy whizzing by on the other side of the road in a power scooter, with red stamp flag flying. So, I did a double take, and actually, he wasn’t whizzing by….he was whizzing…by his scooter…waving the free hand…so, I thought, maybe, he needed help…I turned around, to ask…and, he says he can’t figure out how to close his zipper. Didn’t know if he should pull up, or down. Tried to phone his mom, to ask her, but she told him to ask his dad. He said he phoned dad, but the battery went dead. I asked: on the phone, or on the scooter? He said “both”…he didn’t realize which way the wind was coming from, and it blew back on the scooter battery, and shorted it out. Damn that uric acid can be dangerous! I asked him if I could help, and he said: “well, maybe, you could ask his friends on 3dn to start a gofundme page.” I asked who he was, and he said, red, and then rambled off about 30 aliases. I told him he didn’t have any friends on 3Dn, and if I knew who he was, I wouldn’t have stopped. He pleaded with me to take him to NB, cuz he needed to go to a dryout centre there…no, not substance abuse…to dry out his pant leg. So, I told him I would call a troll truck….I mean a tow truck, to pick up his scooter, and, I afforded him the common decency, of someone in need, by allowing him to use my air compressor to dry his pant leg….warning him to blow off in the same direction of the wind, to avoid wetting my compressor. He was thankful, until I told him I was a Rider fan, and he became totally unglued, handed the air hose back to me…told me to cancel the troll truck…uh, tow truck…and he would try to get someone else to help him, he would wait for a Stamps fan. I told him, good luck with that, you are in SK. and the last Stamp fan passing through here was after Grey Cup last year, looking to trade in his jersey for a Rider jersey.
BTW, it sure was funny watching this guy hanging out at the side of the road waiting for help from a Stamps fan.

    • I was mad because you wouldn’t give me a wet nap to clean my hands.

  26. Thumbs down to the riders promotions department. The most environmentally unfriendly season ticket kit ever!!!!
It’s 2018, we should all try harder.

    • Finger up to your continual Rider hate.

    • I Agree. Heard with the stamp Game tickets there is an extra voucher that entitles the holder to a free Tims double double for every T.D. scored by the Stamps. Obvious blatant waste of paper. Good on you for catching that little environmental gaff. I will be sure to voice my displeasure with this since it’s 8 quarters and……………..counting.

      • Are your sure? Stamp tickets aren’t out yet.
        All that paper is recyclable.
FYI in the past when they done those type of promotions, you just bring the ticket stub, not a separate voucher.
        Nice Try

  27. MAny TNX, YUP…I am OK with honorable mention. It was kind of like RED in 30…leaving out all of the bizarre/hilarious nuances of the story, and presenting the bottom line. The only thing I couldn’t figure out was why he wanted to use my air compressor. He is always blowing…hot air…so, he should have been able to look after himself….even if the sight is not pretty.

Well I had some good laughs tonight thanks to a few posters on this site!
If anyone remembers what the story line for the article was i just want to add that according to Rod Pederson Kuale was injured and could not complete the workout. There were however some pretty impressive players that will no doubt be invited to the next stage as well as some duds to be weeded out. Sounded promising.

  29. HUH? Kuale? Who is he? We were following a story line?
oops! Got carried away…must have missed that!!

    • I lost all track once you got on the Yellow head, and tried to help some guy on a scooter with no concept of wind direction.

  30. me too, yup…thing is, he has no concept at all, of almost anything, especially football.
BTW, somewhere on this site, there was a heated debate about NIs vs Is…and a number of Canuck QBs were mentioned. But, I never saw, in any of that, the most prolific homegrown QB: Russ Jackson. I didn’t like him, however, if he wasn’t as good as he was, Ronnnie would not have migrated to Riderville.

    • Not liking Russ Jackson is the 1970’s version of ridersfans not liking BLM today. It’s because he always has your number!
