Riders sink Argos for first season-opening win since 2014

Craig Slater, Canadian Press

Never one to shy away from talking both on and off the field, Charleston Hughes made an impactful statement in his first game with his new team.

The 11-year veteran, in his first season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, had three sacks in his new uniform and led a spirited defensive effort in a 27-19 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL regular-season opener for both teams.

“I think I made a statement,” Hughes said. “I think I set the tone for the rest of the season for what kind of game it’s going to be and what I’m going to bring to every game.”

Hughes and the Riders defensive unit disrupted Argos quarterback Ricky Ray, pressure him and limited Toronto’s offensive push for much of the first half. The Argos managed just a field goal in the first two quarters and trailed 14-4 at halftime.

“It’s very important to get pressure on (Ray),” Hughes said. You have to get to him because he’s dangerous when he’s sitting in the pocket and getting ready to throw the ball.”

Ray finished with respectable numbers – 233 yards passing on 22-of-37 attempts – but it was the one interception he threw in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory for the Riders.

Trailing 17-12 with 13 minutes remaining, Ray had the Toronto offence marching towards midfield. That’s when Riders cornerback Nick Williams picked off a Ray pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown to restore a double-digit lead, 24-12.

“We came out and we did what we had to do,” Hughes said of the team’s defensive effort. “Game in and game out we have to get better. There is a lot we could have done better in this game. I feel like once we go back and watch the film and review all the mistakes we can get better.”

Toronto’s head coach Marc Trestman said the pressure from Hughes and Saskatchewan’s front four disrupted the Argos timing and put the team in an early hole.

“I don’t think we were clean in our run game. We certainly weren’t clean in throwing the football either,” Trestman said. “We didn’t play as well as we’re capable of playing. We did get better in the second half and moved the ball, but we can’t allow our defence to play as well as it did and not do more with the football.”

Toronto did gain some traction in the second half. Ray marched the team deep inside Saskatchewan territory early in the fourth quarter and backup quarterback James Franklin plunged one yard for a touchdown, the team’s first of the game. That brought Toronto to within five (17-12) despite being outplayed to that point.

After the Riders responded with the Marshall pick-six, Ray pushed back and led the team on a scoring drive. Franklin, in again for short yardage, threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Declan Cross to make it 24-19 with two minutes left.

But it was too little, too late at that point.

Quarterback Zach Collaros, making his Roughriders debut, along with running back Jerome Messam marched Saskatchewan down the field and capped the late drive with a Brett Lauther field goal to put the game out of reach.

“Our defensive line is crazy,” said Riders receiver Naaman Roosevelt., who caught Collaros’ first touchdown pass as a Roughrider, a 13-yard strike in the first half.

“Even our secondary was going all out tonight. We hate seeing all those guys every day at practice. Those guys do a great job and we rely on them to make plays. Our receivers make plays too, but it was our defence that stepped up tonight.”

Collaros finished the night 18-of-25 passing for 203 yards. Messam rushed 21 times for 72 yards.

James Wilder Jr., the league’s Most Outstanding Rookie in 2017, didn’t factor in the Argos offence either in the first half. He finished the game with just 17 rushing yards. He did, however, catch four passes for 68 yards.

In Week 2, the Riders will visit the Ottawa Redblacks on Thursday. Toronto will return home on Saturday and host the Calgary Stampeders.

Well done, Riders. Some definite good players to watch as we go forward. Moncrief was all over the field. Collaros’ confidence grew each possession. What can you say about Hughes?

Off to a good start, finally. Thanks, Calgary, for Hughes.

Have rider fans been to Calgary yet to see the pandas?
They all should, they must pay homage to all things black and white.

The riders came out full of piss and vinegar, especially Hughes. First game of year, huge chip on his shoulder. But by second half the real riders started to emerge. The D-line was tapped out and only the officials could lift them to victory.

Congratulations on the win, but if you are going to win off weird 3rd down gambles and the will of the officials, you will still struggle.

Not sure what game you watched. It sure wasn’t the game the rest of us watched. You best be removing all that red anger and hatred from your eyes boy. Cause you can’t see sh*t. The Riders shut down Ricky Rae and had to go to the bull pen. Wake up pal.

        what!!!!!????
Ray picked you apart in the 4th quarter. Where those 2 TD’s just a bug in my TV’s software???

        • Rrider20 // June 16, 2018 at 1:23 am //

ray didnt throw any tds retard.. he was picked off once.. but didnt score a touchdown.. it was franklin who threw the pass to cross.. yoour a moron.. go back to your cow pasture

          • Did I say he threw 2 TDS????
Just he moved the ball very well allowing these TD’s to be scored!
The pick 6 should have been called back on PI

          • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:29 pm //

Equine Excellence, we were at the game. The pick-six was a very debatable call that could have gone either way. It was ruled as a touchdown for the Roughriders, and there would have to be clear evidence that there was pass interference which there wasn’t before the call could be overturned. Earlier in the game, Brett Lauther kicked a 32-yard field goal that “clearly” went though the uprights, and the game official ruled the kick wide. If you really need to find excuses, please provide them for your team that lost two Grey Cups because they messed up. Take a break, eh!!!

        • Huff's Neighbor // June 16, 2018 at 9:43 am //

Who won the game lou? That is all that matters. So simple.

    • Be afraid Bo….

      • lol
You are getting ahead of yourself a tad Yup. Long way to go before you have the privilege of playing the Stamps. Toronto is 1 thing, you still need to beat the the big boys in Alberta often.

        • How are u back here already ?

Be afraid Bo, be very afraid!

          • Oach my SHOULDER !!!, will be the comment from Bo MEVI around weeks of the CFL season . BOMEVI after the game commented on his new carreer of selling shady used cars at a local dealership saying “I hope my arm will be well enough to point at the correct junkers so I can feed myself “.” Yeah that hit from Charleston was helllacious , I only wish Derick was still able to provide proper protection 1on1 vs Charleston so I still would have a CFL career.” BOMEVI went on to say.

        • Lol – only need to beat the big boys in Alberta once at the end of the year and really, we don’t even need to be on the field to do that as most years opposing teams could watch the Stamps beat themselves from the sidelines.

        • Is that the big boys that lost to these Argos last year…. Ya that’s what I thought.

        • Lancaster/Reed // June 16, 2018 at 2:26 am //

Don-key (red, manyhandles) keeps getting booted and keeps coming back because he is a classic narcissist who doesn’t believe the rules apply to him.

        • Messamtrain // June 16, 2018 at 10:40 am //

Yes Toronto is one thing…one thing that bear the Stamps in the cup last year. It’s going to be tight this year. Winnipeg, EDM and Sask are going to make it impossible for CGY to run away in the west standings. 3rd or 4th for the old mares this year and time for some humility

    • True Green // June 16, 2018 at 1:36 am //

    • Puck Hog // June 16, 2018 at 1:43 am //

Weren’t you told to shut up, Red?

    • Riders have a legit D and Collaros looks like he’s shaking off the rust. All the big off season acquisitions contributed: Collaros, Hughes, and Messam. Haven’t seen this kind of book end pressure pass rush from a Rider club since the days of Chick n Baggs

    • K red. What???? Great game riders. Need work in places but this was the defending champs si real nice

  5. Terrible game from Toronto, but the good news is the Argos have already clinched a home playoff game.

Worst performance on the night was, without question, the brutal coaching by Trestman.

Completely abandoned the run game and inexplicably didn’t challenge for PI on the pick six that essentially sealed the game.

    • What sealed the game for the Riders was the “pick six” by Ray. The Riders played a better more consistent game on offense an defense and deserved to win the game…the score actually “flattered” the Argos and finished closer then the play of the two teams in the game overall would indicate if you just looked at the “box score”.

Thank you lions fan for an honest comment. I know your true inner feelings so that must have been a little hard.
You have restored my faith in those who sometimes I feel are lost in hatred.
I am hoping Wally has a great year for his farewell season. So are many other Rider fans.
        Cheers

        • Thanks 3rd&1, you are witnessing the NEW LF4L. The Riders have gained my respect given how the organization has represented itself in the wake of the Humboldt Broncos disaster and aided in facilitating and pulling the grieving families, friends, and community together in the process of recovery in multiple and MANY classey ways.
If the Lions do not win the Grey Cup, I hope the Riders do.

I laughed so hard when Scrub Ray threw that lame duck for a pick 6. It looked like someone in the stands shot the thing a wing off the thing the way it came out of there. He should go back to his route sales job, as long as he doesn’t drive like he throws. Hate to be coming at him in the other lane if Wobbly Wicky was weaving. Rickety Ray should be retired by now. He could be on CPP he’s so old.

        • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:36 am //

You have to grant RR a mulligan here because apparently the Argo’s water boy accidentally gave him a bottle of Gatorade instead of Geritol. As far as his route sales job goes, Frito-Lay has a strict policy of only hiring employees that are under a Century old…RR doesn’t qualify.

        • Lancaster/Reed // June 16, 2018 at 3:13 pm //

Scrub Ray. A shot clearly over Area51’s bow. Nicely done.

      • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:42 am //

        No kidding…with you.

    • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:42 am //

They’ve already clinched a home playoff game? Oh yeah, I get it, you have some “expert” information that the other three East teams are going to fold before the season ends…I get it.

    • Huff's Neighbor // June 16, 2018 at 9:45 am //

Of course they play bad. Just amit it IQ of less that 51, the blue shirts got owned, you know it. Excuse away, to be expected from you. Get used to it lou, Riders are for real.

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:33 pm //

Area51, again, the pick-six was a very debatable call that could’ve gone either way. Game officials ruled a touchdown and if the Argos would’ve challenged the call, the play very likely would’ve stood. We had seats by the play and the big-screen replay showed no “conclusive” evidence of pass interference. It was a negligible play that could’ve gone either way.

  6. It feel so good. Great game. ZC looked like a STUD.

    • Zac looked ok , he was terrible for the first few series when getting pressured, but gained confidence as the game went on . What Iam looking for is Collaros to build on this performance , he barely had 200 yrds, but had good high percentage completions. So Glad Collaros played well but there is a lot of room for improvement. Was uber pumped with our D man that was almost LIGHTS OUT!!!

    • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:46 am //

He resembled an upright support? Well, yeah, he did look a little stiff…

  7. Good to see Collaros finally out of that embarrassing gong show in Hamilton.

As I explained to Rider Fan last year, Collaros is a franchise QB – – something the Riders desperately needed.

Once again, the assessment of Area51 was on point.

    • Ridersrule // June 16, 2018 at 1:02 am //

Before you go and get hurt patting yourself on the back collaros was 18 for 25 200’yards and 1 TD . I’m happy we won but it wasnt a 400 yard game with 4 TD’s .

      • doobzacheria // June 16, 2018 at 1:12 am //

Yup, but Zach was solid. More importantly he got some confidence and shook off the losing streak (and shook off sharing the title for most consecutive losses as a starting QB). As the game went on, he seemed to get stronger. I’m on record as not being a Zach fan, I’ve said that he was the most overrated player in the CFL, but now I’m rooting for him. I am hoping he continues to progress back to his former form and proves me wrong. Go Riders!

    • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:11 am //

Yep….nothing like breaking out of your 0-12 loser QB streak by playing against a 100 year old QB…I certainly would tag him franchise QB now…yep…

      • Marc Antony // June 16, 2018 at 8:58 am //

Good grief. The guy played well and won man. Why are you so obsessed with bad-mouthing Zach Collaros? If Collaros walked on water you’d still slag him like he stole your marbles when you were a kid. Please, get over it. Aside from being silly, it’s annoying.

        • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:06 am //

Buddy, if you don’t like my comments, don’t reply…or best don’t even read them. Or better yet just go back to Cleopatra.

          • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:10 am //

And by the way his 0-12 streak was one loss away from tying the all time futility rate Mr. Cleopatra…those are FACTS…silliness is in the eye of the beholder.

      • A 100 year old QB with 4 rings. When was the last championship, oh yeah, the 2017 season. Toronto Argonaut 2017 Grey Cup Champions – how sweet it is!!!

        • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:07 am //

My apologies. He HAS amplified the Geritol stocks…better invest before it’s too late!

          • Solid response. Doesn’t change the fact that Ricky has won 2 Grey Cups for Toronto in his time here. The Cats? Wasn’t MC Hammer dancing the last time the Cats won? The gift that keep on giving. U CAN’T TOUCH THIS!!! Go MC Go!!!

    • You are your own biggest fan douchebag.

  8. THREE CLASSEY moves by the Riders that I noticed before the game (kickoff) even happens. One minute of silence for the CFL greats who passed away over the past year; “Humbodt Strong” written at mid-field; and Coach Jones wearing the “Humboldt Strong” ribbon on his left collar…Very Classey Indeed. The Ridwrs have gained my respect not just for one year as I previously proclaimed; but for ALL TIME.
Great performance by Zack Colloros after a slow start during the first quarter. Great to see Colloros get his first win as a Rider and having a great game overall. Also great game by the defense. Hughes certainly played like a “beast”. Great game Riders.

    • Cheers Lionsfan

    • Thanks for your nice comments , cheers to you!!!

    • doobzacheria // June 16, 2018 at 1:17 am //

Damn LionsFan4Life… I saw the caps and instantly threw you the finger…then I read the rest. I’m sorry, trying to read a different posters repeated posts with random caps has made me instantly associate caps with that feller.

Much respect to you and yours. And I hope that Jennings gets a nice redemption performance as well. Sorry, I must cheer for the Als only because I always cheer for East vs West when the Riders aren’t playing. But I’ll cheer for you in my heart!

      • Thanks for your post, it is much appreciated. I hope that Jennings plays a consistent game against the Alouettes tomorrow like Colloros did tonight. If Jennings does, the Lions will win. Game will be interesting as Willey also has to prove with his “on field play” that he is a starting QB in the CFL.

        • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:36 pm //

You changed a colour, Lions fan. I respect your mentions. Good luck to your team.

  9. Ya sure Area 51. Rider fans that understand football knew that Jones wasn’t going to pay Collaros that kind of quid unless he felt he still had game. It’s the part time fans that don’t understand and listen to all the negative hype. If Collaros has come out on the losing end. All those jack asses would have already been in here. Just like Nessam and Hughes both had a good game. Unlike what Red or Sunshine McMahon has been spewing.

    • I think Red has spewed his negativity already above, blaming the refs for Argo’s loosing. lol, ahh well at least the hate is consistent . Must kill a guy like Red to see Hughes having a great game and more fun and emotion then I have seen him exhibit when with the stamps.

  10. Boys…..still a little rough around the edges, and its only one win. But how about MONCRIEF. Friggen guy was everywhere.

    • Offence still needs work but Collaros barely played in the per-season and this was his first regular season game with the Riders, so it’s to be expected. Only 200 yards but a nice high percentage passing night with no ints. Clark continues to make bad mistakes. Bladek was in for a while and played well, but then I think Harrison came in again. Not sure what was going on there. The new receivers look very good!

Defence played great for the most part! Charleston freakin’ Hughes! Moncrief, Marshall, Johnson, Jefferson. Lots of great games.

      • Yes commentators mentioned at times in certain sets the Riders had 5 Canadians on the field on Offense. So some of the Riders have 0 Canadian talent chirping is off base. Granted the Riders dont have uber Canadian depth but we have enough Canadian talent to get by this year and Rome was not built in a day , next year ‘cdn’ depth will be addressed significantly. It took Winnipeg and Edmonton a while to restock after them being dumpster fires as well.

  11. Funny. Not 1 rider fan has mentioned the gifted PI calls.
If those had gone against the riders we wouldn’t hear the end of it for a week!!

    • Rrider20 // June 16, 2018 at 1:29 am //

you can complain about the missed pass interference all you want bud.. trestman had a challenge and didnt use it so its his own fault it wasnt called back.. ive said it once ive said it a million times.. your a moron.. poser cfl fan.. go back to your cow pasture.. again..

    • Peter N // June 16, 2018 at 2:02 am //

Ball was tipped by Jefferson before any contactnon the receiver on the pick six. Once ball is tipped the r receivers are fair game to hit and interference is off the table.

That is why Trestman did not challenge.

      • Actually the ball wasnt tipped. Was an awful throw..

      • BC Dave // June 16, 2018 at 2:14 am //

Ball was never toughed. Wobbly Wicky just threw up a lame duck.

        • BC Dave // June 16, 2018 at 2:15 am //

touched , damm auto correct lol.

        • … which is why I believe Trestman didn’t challenge for PI. If there was no hope of the potential receiver catching the ball there is usually no call.

      • Sec. 39 // June 16, 2018 at 6:53 pm //

I have to say THIS ^^^^ is he type of lost WE all need to start emulating. Factual, no troll-like content and is about actual football. Thanks Peter N. very refreshing. Acting an adult in a playground full of children.

    • Haha – blow it out your ass. You somehow get Edwards to allow you here – start out alow them hit full stride >> booted, rinse, repeat.

Clearly you are here to get clicks…this is AT LEAST 18 handles and still here.

Dry up and blow away !!!!

    • CFLFIRST // June 16, 2018 at 10:02 am //

Trestman could have challenged the PI calls.

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:39 pm //

Weren’t you the one that said the Riders wouldn’t win? Now you’re finding excuses why the green and white won. You sound like a Liberal prime minister. Remember, excuses are for losers. If the Toronto Maple Leafs found an excuse why they lost for the last 50 years, they wouldn’t even have a fan base — PATHETIC!!!

    • “If” is a fantasy.
You should try to live in a world of things that DID happen; for example, “The Calgary Stampeders lost the 2017 Grey Cup to the Toronto Argonauts.” No “if” required. It is simply a fact.

  12. mr62cats // June 16, 2018 at 12:53 am //

Glad to see Collaros is getting back to his winning ways. Back to back games between Sask and Hamilton next month so we’ll see if getting rid of him and treating him like crap will come back to haunt the Cats.

    • Philski // June 16, 2018 at 5:21 am //

I would hardly call getting 1.4, signed on one leg at the time, getting treated like “crap”. Mr. Caretaker more than compensated him for a largely unproven career. He never met expectations – or came close, other than a brief blip in the summer of ’15. Also as a TC fan I’m not worried about him coming back to “haunt us” because he’ll be on the IR by then.

      • mr62cats // June 16, 2018 at 8:00 am //

Philski: If you want me to be more specific….June Jones, Tillman and Austin treated Collaros like crap after Jones took over the team. Collaros was on the bench for the rest of the season so he would be more attractive as a trade. It was Austin and the rest who gave him his big salary…and then could not wait to get rid of him. Collaros’ concussions did not help much but he seems to have shook that off now. Looks to me like the the whole management team had Manziel fever. Masoli is a band-aid solution and we have yet to see if and when Manziel will be able to handle the starters job. No question the football business can be very unfair but Collaros handled his situation a lot better than the Tiger-Cats did. If the (my!)Tiger-Cats sputter with their QB’s and O-line this season they have no-one to blame but themselves.

        • Not the way I read it … I suspect that had Jones been more than interim, he would have taken what turned out to be the best offer from the Argos.

Once Jones was no longer interim and Austin wasn’t going to stand in the way – there wasn’t a reason for other teams to offer much.

It will be an interesting season should Collaros build back up to a high level of play where Collaros haters have repeatedly said he’ll be running for his life in Riderville and will wash out quickly.

Doing well won’t fit with their favourite POV, which might be unsettling.

As for the Cats, I’d prefer they do well to. I’d love to see a Rider – Cats GC but the season is young.

        • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:18 am //

Respect your points. That “band aid” however fared okay tonite vs the Stumps albeit one bad decision. Quite frankly I believe if Collaros was in their it would have been 120-1.

      • Handing off an 8-3 record with a huge lead that should have meant 9-3 is a “brief blip”??

Sounds like your bitterness is interfering swamping reason.

        • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:23 am //

Nope. It’s the 0-12 that followed after signing a big fat contract courtesy of Mr. Caretaker. If you take the change don’t play (and act) like a chump. Pretty simple, non?

  13. Agreed, Yup room for improvement, but overall a much better result then last Friday very happy to see some dominate D. Best was to see Zac mporve throught the night. That TD to Naman seemed to have Zac turn the corner. Man the new guys played well, Marshall pick 6, Stanford a couple nice catches to extend drives, Williams-Lambert some nice cathes as well. We will enjoy Montcreif for this year as he will be NFL carrer bound next year ..but man is he fun to watch. Looking forward to Thursdays game.

  14. john gatti // June 16, 2018 at 1:02 am //

That was a pre season game for the Argo one’s who never saw a minute of pre season play. Trustman blew that just like his no challenge.

    • Many of the Rider 1s saw very little or no playing time in the preseason. If you’re talking about the pick 6 play I don’t think there was anything to challenge. The replay showed Gainey on Green, iirc, but the pass was to the outside receiver, not Green, and you can’t challenge illegal contact.

      • Equine Excellence // June 16, 2018 at 1:17 am //

yeah, of course i’m taking about that play… and the PI at the end!
if you want to call the pick 6 play illegal contact fine… just because it’s not challengeable doesn’t mean it’s not a penalty. The ref should have called it… and if your saying it was inconsequential you are wrong!!!!!!!! it affected the play!

        • Rrider20 // June 16, 2018 at 1:33 am //

its didnt affect the play at all.. yes he hit the reciever but either way .. ray threw a very shitty pass that wasnt tipped at all just a floater that landed no where near said reciever.. moron.. did you watch the game or just the tsn highlights.. drunk clown

        • Lots of penalties aren’t called when the receiver has no shot at the ball.

Didn’t see the whole game but the TSN commentator was saying the calls were in his opinion, borderline but were being called the same way.

          • Nice comment , yeah , there were a couple of iffy calls both ways. One terrible call against Marshall for illegal contact on a Argo receiver on a 2nd down play where Ray was under pressure and just throwing the ball away, Argos scored their 1st major of the game on that series. So the no call on the pick 6 kind of evened things out in my mind. just thank god for the smoothness of the game without having to endure 348 delays due to flag challenges.

        • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:44 pm //

AGAIN, the call was a debatable call that could have gone either way. If there was NO conclusive evidence of an overturn, the call STANDS!!! Don’t cry over spilled milk. Excuses are for losers!!!

      • Just what I said reading that play RDF, also possible the officials angels were such that they thought the ball was tipped as Willey had his hands up and Ray threw a terrible ball that spun like it was tipped.

  15. Please remove Equine from this thread and all future threads. We all know who she is and don’t need her around anymore now that the season is upon. Step up 3D! Dunk and Gasson both did it, now let’s get everyone of you writers on that same page. Thanks in advance.

  16. 4thand26 // June 16, 2018 at 1:09 am //

The game was tough to watch at the start. Both offences looked off and out of sync. But the game for the Riders is a simple high percentage low risk ball control offense.
This will not work against teams like Calgary or a Edmonton. Collaros needs to be better and stop throwing off hi back foot.
The Riders defense is playing with aggression and trying to force and create turnovers. After years of Richie Hall bend don’t break this has to make Rider fans excited.
The DB for Saskatchewan were aggressive and got away with some calls. But it happens to every team and we just have to know it will happen to every team.
Ray looked rusty and shaky. He was hearing foot steps and rushing throws.
The Argos got some pressure but Collaros seemed didn’t seem to rattled by it.
Wilder Jr. was contained for the most part. He didn’t seem to be able to break it open.
Though the talk all game was Hughes, moncrief is the Riders best defensive player. He is going to be a star in this league.

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:46 pm //

Totally agree with most, if not all, of your writing. Moncrief looks excellent on the playing field.

  17. Scottsask // June 16, 2018 at 1:22 am //

Moncrief was fantastic tonight! O line played well enough and Zach managed the game efficiently, he looked to gain confidence as the game went on. I wad concerned earlier on there were s few flutterballs, but I’ll tske the win!

  18. Bottom line is normally a quick turn around like the Riders have is not a good thing for back to back wins. however in this case it might not be a bad , thing, no major injuries tonight, the D was hot and emotional, tons of rotation by Jones so roter should be quite fresh. Most of all, a quick turn around might be excellent for Collaros to build on his WIN and build on his confidence. Lets see what happens Thursday, in Jones we TRUST !!!

  19. Pennyrocker // June 16, 2018 at 1:55 am //

Awesome game for Rider defense. RAY did his last quarter charge and was a little too late.
Riders still need to learn once in the red zone convert to TD
I watched some loose ball handling by Riders which needs to be improved before they start costing.

  20. Let’s pump the brakes on Moncrief as a lock for the NFL next year, Rider Fan.

He’d going there as a safety, but the NFL has already said thanks but no thanks to him once for that position.

What new film would he have to show of him as a safety? Nothing. He’s playing LB for Regina. What new aspects of his game has he developed as a safety? Nothing. He’s playing LB for Regina.

Biggest problem though is that he’s not doing anything on ST. Without being able to show that he can ball out on ST, Moncrief has ZERO chance at getting to the NFL.

Remember in 2014 when I explained that Brian Peters would be playing in the NFL? Rider Fan was incredulous, and some even insisted Chad Kilgore had a better chance of playing on Sundays than Peters did.

But Peters was killing it on ST for Regina and even though he didn’t do anything exceptional as a LB, he was in the NFL the following season and most importantly he’s played three years there.

    • MR. Green // June 16, 2018 at 3:26 am //

Ok buddy. I gave u respect today. Riders kicked the shit out of Toronto. Who !ay be here or not doesn’t matter. 2018 matters. Your opinion is why you are home. STFU already. Toronto was lucky the game was this close . Riders dominated the trenches. Moncrief is all-star caliber and if u look back, I said that. Fck the NFL. You’re not a scout nor are u a professional. Gl ahead and make another long statement. U look stoooooopid.

    • CFLFIRST // June 16, 2018 at 11:01 am //

I remember the NFL said thanks but no thanks to Cam Wake. Talent evaluators make mistakes all the time whether they are in the CFL or NFL. The talent differential is very slim and when politics come into play, some players aren’t given enough opportunities in games and mistakes are made.

  21. MR. Green // June 16, 2018 at 3:09 am //

Fyck Sportsnet and TSN. Riders win. Get over it, all of you.. Collaros is the MOP!

  22. I finally heard Chris Jones speak. OMG I thought those kind of deep southern US accents were destroyed by cable TV long ago. Does not everyone I sound like the evening news people?

  23. ESPN promoted CFL games to ESPN2 from ESPN plus from last week. The Manziel attention effect?

    • Maybe , but the general perception of the CFL as fairly good football is growing with football fans in the States. ( more and more recognizable guys like Auburns Nic Marshall; won a NCAA championship as QB there/ now Riders starting corner, are bringing NCAA fans to the CFL audience, ESPN is HUGE re NCAA football down south ). AKA the Manzel watch , more his Texas A&M fans wanting him to successes anywhere then NFL fans. ESPN is huge with NCAA fan base down south so they might be thinking these fans will follow former big time NCAA guys playing here that miss he cut re NFL. Bottom line is the CFL might be in for a very large new ESPN contract ( by our CFL standards ) if the trend continues and the CFL product improves just abit more. Ergo why I dont think it wise to limit offseason tryout camps as that is how these former NCAA greats get attracted to the CFL via recruiting (aka William -Lambert, Vaughn, Harrison, Marshall , all starting for the riders this year via try out camps.)

  24. Ari Katz // June 16, 2018 at 7:31 am //

Hey Area 51, Argos suck and the Hamilton “gong show” has a true “game changer” who will light the league up . The Riders were lucky. Riders only won this game because Trestman was sleeping on th job. Unbelievable that he did not throw a challenge flag. Riders will not win many games with Collaros barely getting 200 yards passing.

  25. I’m very disappointed with the Argos O-Line… couldn’t stop the Riders front four (who aside from Jefferson aren’t special) which negated any run game and put too much pressure on Ray to get the passing game going. With only three Nationals on the O-Line, they simply must be better.

    • True Green // June 16, 2018 at 10:47 am //

You must have missed the 3 sacks and 4 pressures from Hughes, one of 11 players of all time to get over 100 sacks. Not very special at all.

  26. Missed interference call on the interception play.

  27. red you are complaining about the pi on the pick 6 there was a pi call on marshall a few plays after that was not pi so give your head a shake suitor even said that was a borderline call

  28. Blue on blue // June 16, 2018 at 9:12 am //

I have only commented a couple times before. Simply about the Trolls on the site.
The game last night was hard to watch as an Argo fan. It seems Ricky and company start out the same way every year. There is lots of disrespect on here over his age. Yet each season reminds me of an older dude. Can’t get it going until the last third of the season. Yet Grey Cup winners always have a killer last 6 games of the season.
What we use to do all night now takes us all night to do… right Ricky?
As for the Pick 6 …. I’m sorry but my PVR at 1/15th speed shows the Rider defender with his left arm behind the receiver. With his front arm going to knock the ball down. Contact was made but not until the ball was no where near catchable. Everything is timing and that DB timed it well. Therefore NO pass interference and NO contacting the receiver. Still… why do the trolls always make things about 1 or 2 plays.
The facts are the Riders played way better that Toronto and by far deserved the win. The Argos have a lot of work to do. 1 game doesn’t mean anything but a good feeling for a week.

    • True Green // June 16, 2018 at 10:52 am //

I disrespect here to RR, the man is a legend. What you say about coming on strong late in the season may be anout the most accurate statement in this thread. In the east that might also work as the playoff spot is much easier to lock up. Come into the playoffs 8-10 or 9-9 with a hot QB and what does your record even matter?

I was just glad he didn’t get he. All back with more than 10 seconds left in the 4th. That man is a wizard and if he’s have had 45-60 seconds the game could have ended different!

Appreciate your comments in the PI “controversy”. Bad calls and missed calls affect every team and from what I saw last night both teams may have gotten a couple of breaks. It’s good to have honest fans in hear.

    • Great comment, as well Ricky was gaining some rhythm late in the 4th, so glad the game ended when it did. Ray and the Argo’s will be just fine, and the Riders did play some great defense ( I think any cfl qb Riley , BOMEVI, Jennings included would of struggled last night).

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:57 pm //

Very good comments, blue. I keep arguing with that pathetic Calgary fan that continues to look for excuses why Saskatchewan won. As irritating as the mosquito that he is, the missed PI call was not missed and was the right call in my view. Really, the play was so close that the call couldn’t be overturned. We were in the lowers at the game by the 35-yard line home side when the touchdown occurred and the megatron screen showed the replay but it was too close to call PLUS uncatchable. I don’t know what it takes for some losers to let things go. Like a mosquito, maybe, he needs a swat.

  29. Could 3 down nation staff correct the name of the person in the 7th paragraph being credited with the interception. The name is Nick Marshall not Nick Williams. A subsequent paragraph gets the name right.

    • Thank You, I can’ believe some of the comments made. It must be really hard going through life with that much hatred and bitterness in life.

  30. Pennyrocker // June 16, 2018 at 9:43 am //

After watching the hi lights Franklin did not cross the line for a touchdown. He was stopped at the line. Also there was a holding call that wasn’t called against the Argos. Ic anyone wants to say there was an interference call on the interception from Marshall look at other calls that were not called on the results of points.

I also have to say Wilder looked good to night especially the one run up the middle

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 3:59 pm //

NOT ENOUGH TO HAVE THE CALL OVERTURNED ON THE FIELD. NO PASS INTERFERENCE!!!

  31. You must be happy with the result. Are you partying like it’s 1999?

  32. Equine Excellence // June 16, 2018 at 10:27 am //

As I say, If this game was a reverse score, with a reverse situation on the non call pick 6, These are completely different thoughts on the officiating and everyone knows it. Look at last year’s Eastern Final. Do people remember the complaints?
Too bad no one was there to witness the game. Very poor attendance. It wasn’t a sell out and lots of empty seats. That not even rider fans can deny.

    • Lancaster/Reed // June 16, 2018 at 10:55 am //

Yes, i was disappointed it wasnt a sell out, but it is still a bigger crowd than the stamps will get all season, except for labour day. I fully expect the stamps attendance to continue it’s downward trend.

      • Equine Excellence // June 16, 2018 at 11:23 am //

Stamps crowds are pretty consistent from year to year. I guess the curiosity of the new stadium is over in Regina

        • Lancaster/Reed // June 16, 2018 at 11:51 am //

Stamps crowds are consistently dwindling. 2015-30;376, 2016-27,474, , 2017-27,380. Riders will beat calgary in attendance again this year as stamps attendance dips below 26k as they will not be the regular season dominators of the past. On another note, every time you get kicked off, do you have to get a new e-mail address to get past being blocked mr. rules dont apply to me?

        • The only place the crowds are consistent at McMahon are the lineups for the can.

      • I suspect the exhibition games didn’t help bring out the crowd with questionable weather during the week.

    • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 4:01 pm //

Any excuses on the Stampeders last two Grey Cup losses? Please inform.

  33. Riders Destroyed the team that destroyed the Stamps in the cup. Imagine how brutally Riders will steamroll Calgary in their 2 meetings. Free play on the bingo card for Riders on those dates.

  34. Rick Cowan // June 16, 2018 at 11:19 am //

Red you are always the first one to say that the refs favor the Riders I don’t think you were watching the same game I was last night because the pi call on Marshall was bad it was borderline at best and the Argos got points off it so give your head a shake

    • That’s selective observation. The riders had a pick 6 off a non call and had the same borderline PI call go their way on the riders final drive.

      • Lancaster/Reed // June 16, 2018 at 11:55 am //

There was nothing borderline about that last PI against TO. The only thing that mugging didnt have was a gun.

      • That call at the end of the game was absolutely correct. If you can’t see that on your TV, then maybe you should read the rule book and then start on a path of football reffing to gain some experience.

      • greenrider89 // June 16, 2018 at 4:05 pm //

I would have finer names for you because you “live” for excuses. Again, the call was the right call. Please give us excuses why Calgary lost the last two Grey Cups.

  35. anyways Congratulations on the win. 2 points is 2 points

  36. For the people disrespecting Ray, keep in mind he has won FOUR (4) Grey Cups. That is as many as your proud Rider franchise! Let that sink in!

Yes, he had a poor game, but he was the only starting QB not to play in preseason, so he was shaking off the rust. And how does 38=100? They need to fix the education system in Saskatchewan!

    • Ridersrule // June 16, 2018 at 12:27 pm //

Well duke boy instead of accusing rider fans disrespecting Ray you might want to read the numerous comments from Argo fans disrespecting him . But maybe where you went to school you only have selective reading . For what it’s worth I think Ray is amazing and scares the heck out of me.

      • My apologies. I just assumed that it was Rider fans trashing Ray because I wouldn’t think that Argos fans would do that, especially considering he JUST won them a cup last year. If you’re right, then I apologize. And thank you for showing respect 🙂

        • BC Dave // June 16, 2018 at 7:04 pm //

You kidding? We have Lion ‘fans’ trashing the Lions lol. Honestly, I think we have the worst fans in the country.

    • Philski // June 17, 2018 at 5:28 am //

“Duke” – let me guess, Genesis…right?

  37. Every Riders article turns into the same cry baby loser whining about this and that. Pathetic.

Riders won that game, well, hung on to win that game and that’s what good teams do so I’m happy for them and their fans. It’s week 1 people! Settle down.

Three Down staff: ban this Equine Calgary guy. He is a nuisance ruining your site. Or just close the comments section altogether. OR, make people sign up and actually own up to their names. Otherwise all you have here is an amateur hour web blog.

  38. The ball was tipped so no PI and no challenge. Am I missing something here? They even mentioned it on TV, what game was everyone is complaining on here talking about? Is everyone more accomplished and seasoned than Trestman? Sheeeeesh. Some real pea brains on here sometimes. Thursday night’s commenting crowd was a lot more civilized than this, what happened? Just cause it’s the Riders all this hate comes out? Pretty weak stuff from alledge grown men, albeit, from what I skimmed there’s only about three serious jealous offenders here. I’m confident 3D will take notice and clean it up.

    • Equine Excellence // June 16, 2018 at 12:28 pm //

I don’t understand where you are coming from. Trestman said post game he wished he challenged PI!

    • It always goes south because of manyhandles. It’s not a coincidence that after he got booted, he’s allowed to slither back on here just in time for the Rider game.

  39. Not a big Chris Jones fan, but that’s how you play a QB who’s confidence has been fractured. 18 out of 25 for 200 yds, mostly 10 yd passes, 1 TD and no picks, and mix in 27 running plays, only one by Collaros. That’s almost half the roughly 60 offensive plays you get in a game! Paying attention Austin? In contrast, Rusty Ray, (let’s call him that, because he didn’t take a snap in the pre-season), was given 13 running plays in total! Rae had one, and Franklin had four in short yardage situations, so that’s 8 runs from your RBs, and the one-year wonder, (Wilder) couldn’t beat a good Rider front 7. Trestman owns this one!

  40. Argos OLine was terrible – – in particular Will Campbell at LT. He was an absolute disaster. Charlie Hughes was just strolling past him. It’s as if Campbell was wearing cement shoes and ankle shackles.

TJ Heath was also really bad. You won’t find a bigger fan of Heath than I am, but I can acknowledge that he was awful last night.

Two asinine 15yd personal fouls cost Toronto THIRTY (30) yards on one play. Then he badly misplayed the Hail Mary that Collaros tossed up to avoid a sack. Heath never turned to locate the ball and it ended up being a huge gain by Holley.

  41. Take away the pick 6 and riders still win 20-19. What’s anyone’s point? It’s the first game, Riders win, big boys move on. If anyone wants to join you’re more than welcome. The rest can lament a loss in a comment section haha.

  42. “You can’t say that”. I just did a$&hole. What are you everyone’s mother? Man I’ve read your comments on here and you are out to lunch 9/10 and you seem very unstable most days. You’re the guy who is constantly kicked off, so you mean nothing to me. You’ve even been banned from your own team’s fan site. Does that make you feel like a big man? You’re a deadbeat troll.

  44. TrueBlue // June 16, 2018 at 2:11 pm //

Neither side (nor officials) particularly crisp. Looking forward to a better outing against the Stamps.

    • GL to your club, indeed the schedule makers did them no huge favors off the start of the schedule , couple of tough teams to face //// hard to build momentum for the rest of the season if things go south, but on the positive it exposes any immediate weaknesses and gives a club a good chance of correcting things early, player change here or there and still get to have a great year. # argo’will be fine , my concern is their loosing fan base in the process. # not argo fan.

  45. Mr curling was actually at the game and is deliriously happy by far the best Riders have looked since pre banjo Bowl injury to Durant not sure what game people on here were watching but the Riders were much more dominant than the score suggests. Smart to let the offensive line gel with the running attack and gain Zach some confidence a perfect night for football so Mister curling is surprised we were 4000 short of a sell-out. Then again should be surprised as the economy in Saskatchewan is bad.

  46. Dennis the menace // June 16, 2018 at 5:04 pm //

The reason the game wasnt sold out is not because of the Economy! Its the 1st game of the season. Its was a Friday night and Summer is just getting started. The Saskatchewan Economy isnt bad. Certain sectors are feeling the crunch from Oil and Potash pricing. However other sectors of the Province are Smoking. So all in all it even out. Just as Alberta is starting to rebound.

  47. How are the Riders going to pay for the mountain of stadium debt when people aren’t showing up at the games?

Rider Fan promised every game would be sold out for the next quarter century – – and now they can’t even manage to sell out the season opener in Year Two.

Maybe this rhetoric about “greatest fans in the entire world” was a bit embellished.

    • A considerable portion of unoccupied seats routinely occur because–for a variety of reasons–season-ticket holders do not show up for certain games. But, of course, that revenue-source is already realized.

  49. For all the puffery about Will Jefferson being “basically unstoppable” last year, he was invisible last night.

Jefferson was badly exposed in the 4thQ when he tried to pick up Jim Wilder in coverage coming out of the backfield.

Wilder just strolled past him and Jefferson was left 5yds behind floundering desperately in pursuit.

Jefferson finally managed to make the tackle – – his only tackle of the game – – after Wilder had picked up a huge 46yd gain.

  50. BC Dave // June 16, 2018 at 7:16 pm //

For a guy whose purpose for coming on here is to “educate” us poor, uninformed casual” fans, you aren’t too bright, are you? He is a DL and not expected to be able to cover pass routes 46 yards downfield. That was a mismatch they found and exploited. The fact he even MADE the tackle speaks volumes. Wow !!!

    • Yes, it was painfully obvious that Jefferson has ZERO chance at covering a RB coming out of the backfield.

So the question is, WTF was Jefferson given coverage responsibility on the play?

Someone was too dumb to realize the limitations of Jefferson’s game.

  51. Things are so bad in Saskatchewan that Mr Curling may have to sell an oil painting just to gas up the limo.At new mosaic a family of 4 costs $500 per game and people are not willing to shell that out 10 times a year. Has nothing to do with the passion of the fanbase, it’s just economics

    He wasn’t invisible
