Argos work out former Pro Bowl returner Dexter McCluster

The Toronto Argonauts worked out American running back and returner Dexter McCluster on Tuesday.

All signs point to the Argos signing the pint-sized playmaker.

McCluster was a second-round pick, 36th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. The 29-year-old ran a 4.53 40-yard time, 4.06 short shuttle, 6.73 three-cone, 37.5-inch vertical and 20 reps on the bench press at the 2010 NFL Combine.

He played seven seasons in the NFL for the Chiefs, Titans and Chargers rushing 250 times for 1,042 yards and two touchdowns, recording 236 receptions for 1,933 yards and seven touchdowns, returned 74 kickoffs for 1,554 yards, 133 punts for 1,388 yards and three touchdowns. 2013 was McCluster’s best year in the NFL when he earned a trip to the Pro Bowl as a returner after producing 686 punt return yards and two touchdowns.

McCluster played collegiately at the University of Mississippi, he rushed for 1,169 yards and eight touchdowns while catching 44 balls for 520 yards and three touchdowns, totalling 1,689 yards and 11 touchdowns as a senior for the Rebels, earning first-team All-SEC (Southeastern conference) honours.

McCluster has been out of pro football since 2016 when he suffered a broken forearm while looking for his cellphone.

  1. Why not. When a guy of his caliber is available and willing, it’s worth a look.

man stampy, you are such a loser. If it was the riders who signed this guy you would be all over it like stink on McMahon Stadium. You are so transparent it sickens me. Can you please just go away and let others enjoy this site and readings without your constant BS!!! No way will anyone give you a break anyways with anything you say so you may as well just F off!!!

        Awesome handle, made me laugh.

The Riders are 4 and 15 all time in the Grey Cup. The great Ron Lancaster was 1 and 4 in the Grey Cup.

So, you should ask yourself who the chokers really are.

Just don’t let him have his own cell phone!

A little surprised Martese Jackson is really good and is only 26 and will probably make less than McCluster. The Cats should be hoping they sit Jackson on the practice roster Williams and Lawrence are not getting it done!

  4. What a nonsensical decision this would be.

Instead of wasting time and money on an big name/high draft pick NFL wash out, do a bit of scouting and bring in a young guy who hasn’t already been through the NFL meat grinder.

That’s the only way you’re going to find the next Chad Kackert or the next Pinball Clemons.

McCluster most likely chomping at the bit to get on the field again. NFL has most likely passed him over for whatever reason so the Argos are smart to possibly give him a shot. Nothing to lose and a lot to gain if he works out.

There is a reason a guy like him is not playing. It’s because younger better and faster guys have stepped up and replaced him.
Argos should be looking at NFL cuts in August to being in a 23 year old in shape guy instead of a 29 year old washout.
But I am sure Huff, Wally and all other GMs wouldn’t know this because we have horses ass and 1001 other armchair GMs here knowing it all.

I would prefer them to be working out a cornerback who doesn’t take so many penalties.

  8. McCluster is much like Brandon (Speedy) Banks… an undersized kick return specialist no longer wanted in the NFL… for all the critics on here you probably aren’t aware the NFL has made many changes to the kick return game and have even considered abolishing kick offs… making players like Speedy B and McCluster expendable… so I say he will be a welcome addition to the Argos… just hope he doesn’t light it up against my Ticats…

  9. Tiger man // July 11, 2018 at 7:39 am //

And Popp should get on the phone and call the Tiger cats to thank them for bringing Manziel into the league…because that likely influenced their opportunity to get McCluster.

  10. Perhaps a good combo with Jackson returning kicks… a double threat for opposing kickers!

  11. McCluster is cross between Banks and Stef Logan. Jackson has had limited production for Argos this season as returner and hasn’t given them much on his offensive snaps. Not sure what McCluster has left as he is a few years removed from his prime.
